Save the Children International facilitates restoration of Hygiene and Water Sanitation at Adaranijo Market, Lagos state

Thursday 17 May 2018

Adaranijo market buzzes with commercial activity, as buyers and sellers spend no less than 10hours daily exchanging goods and currency. Strategically located within Shomolu LGA, and known for its fresh produce, Adaranijo market is readily frequented by Women and children alike. Given the flow of people in and out of the market, and the absence of functional toilet facilities to serve the market area, defecating in the open fast became the order of the day in the area that surrounds Adaranijo market.

As part of the Stop Diarrhea Initiative (SDI)’s Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) implementation strategy to deliver community wide sanitation in Shomolu Local Government Area, and ultimately, increase access to improved sanitation, rehabilitating the toilet facility at Adaranijo market to functional status became imperative, as it had been in a state of disrepair, and unsafe for human use for an extended period. The rehabilitation was also occasioned by the implementation of the Community Led Total Sanitation approach in the community, as part of SDI’s strategy to contribute to a decrease in the prevalence and incidence of diarrhea in under 5 children.       According to Godfrey Iloha, the WASH Advisor, “to achieve an open defecation free community, there must be sanitation infrastructure in public places like markets and parks within the community of interest, so as to ensure that visitors to these places have access to improved sanitation. Otherwise open defecation would continue, thereby polluting the environment and exacerbating the diarrhea burden”

The refurbished 12 unit toilet facility has both male and female compartments, each suited with hand washing stations and powered with a borehole facility for improved hygiene. SDI’s Chief of Party, David Atamewalen, represented by Folake Kuti, Advocacy Adviser and the WASH team- Godfrey Iloha and Bosede Ibirinde led the commissioning and handing over of the renovated facility to the market leaders on February 23rd 2018, at the Adaranijo Market, Bariga-Somolu LGA. Officials of the Local Council Authorities and Community Leaders who graced the occasion include, Mrs. Adeola Kuponiyi, Bariga Local Council Development Area Vice-Chairman, Mrs Sennaike, Bariga Local Council Development Area Council Manager, Chief Olaniyun the “Iyaloja” of Adaranijo market and the Market Secretary, Mr. Adebayo Adebayo. The market Secretary while speaking during the ceremony, said “considering the state of disrepair of the toilet before Save the Children intervened, we are eternally grateful for this work and pledge to continue to maintain the toilet”. The Vice Chairperson of Bariga Local Council Development Area said in her remarks “when you do this kind of help for the community, you are giving life” The toilet facility is expected to provide access to about 500 persons especially women and children, the local government officials present at the handing over promised to work with the market leaders to monitor and contribute to the operation and maintenance of the facility in a bid to ensure sustainability.
